Cynicism aside, you're gonna love it if you get to tune in today to watch this thing on The Worldwide Leader of Self-important Titled Events (nevermind ESPN The Weekend, how about this past week, er, Judgment Week? North Carolina vs. Boston College, Kansas vs. Iowa State . Judgment Week?) Anyway, it's beautiful here, and Peter Gammons and the boys (and girls) are here with The Network, and having Peter here is enough to make it feel like a good thing.
Gang member attacks two men on TriMet bus
After approaching two Hispanic men at the back of a TriMet bus, 20-year-old Andres Napolean-Marcos identified himself as a gang member, displayed a knife and a pair of brass knuckles, and then attacked the two bus passengers. The confrontation happened at 5:17 a.m. on Jan. 23 near the area of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Roselawn Street. The bus driver responded by activating an alarm to notify police of the attack and ordered everyone off of the bus. The fight between the men continued as they left the bus until officers from the Portland's Northeast Precinct contacted the three men on the street. According to the Portland Police Bureau spokesman, Brian Schmautz, Napolean-Marcos believed the two men were rival gang members. Napolean-Marcos was arrested for one count of first-degree attempted assault, two counts of second-degree assault, one count of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of menacing.

Onorato sounds off against Republicans
Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato this afternoon blasted Republican members of County Council, accusing them of practicing "voodoo economics" because of their attempt to repeal the drink and car rental taxes tomorrow. "If the Republicans on [County Council] want to reopen the budget and repeal the [drink tax and car rental tax] I'm ready for the fight," said Mr. Onorato, speaking at a press conference in his Allegheny County Courthouse office. "They want me to give $28 million of property taxes to the Port Authority for the local match, and I won't do it. We're going to take this fight to the voters and we're going to have it out," he said. To that end, he has tapped into his campaign war chest and started a phone bank to call residents in the districts of three Republican council members sponsoring legislation to re-open this year's budget and repeal the drink tax: Vince Gastgeb, R-Bethel Park, Matt Drozd, R-Ross and Jan Rea, R-McCandless.
