This journey to the center of the sports universe will take its toll in cold, hard cash (and credit cards, too). The total cost: $5,033. That's more than $1,675 for each of the three Super Bowls the Patriots have won so far. Or $280 for every game they've won this year. Or a touch over $100 for each of the 50 touchdowns Tom Brady threw for. It comes to $83.88 a minute, or about $41.94 for each play in Sunday's game. Or the cost of 125 white rose bouquets delivered to Gisele Bundchen. About 24,000 of the 73,000 tickets at University of Phoenix Stadium were awarded to average fans through the lotteries the Giants and Patriots held among their pool of season-ticket holders.
Tax swaps, dumb fixes, drought
One area where Republicans under the Gold Dome promise to make important strides is education. The majority should most assuredly pass State Sen. Eric Johnson's SB 458, which would give vouchers to parents of students in chronically failed schools and in a system that loses accreditation. The latter may include Clayton County. The Senate should pass, too, Rep. Jan Jones' House Bill 881, which would give charter school organizers a state-level way around foot-dragging, kill-the-competition local school boards and would make it clear that the money follows the child. Local control means parents, not another level of government. State Rep. John Lunsford (R-McDonough) has a fine idea, too. His House Bill 854, filed last year to deal with financial information that unions would be required to file, has been amended.

Car Rental Costs Going Up March 1st
Mobile's latest annexation means car rental rates will go up starting March 1st. Last month, the City Council voted unanimously to annex all of the Mobile Regional Airport's land, extending the city limits west to Snow Road. The higher city sales tax takes effect March 1. The sales tax rate for businesses on airport property will increase from 7.5 percent to 9 percent, while the sales tax rate for businesses in the newest portions of the police jurisdiction -- which stretches three miles beyond the airport -- will rise from 5.5 percent to 7.5 percent.
