I enjoyed Danny O'Neil's article ("Hawks practice-squad players share house, car and common goal," Seattle Times, Dec. 26). I wish they had kept the term "taxi squad." The late Paul Brown named them that because they worked part time for the owner's taxi-cab business. We always root for the underdogs, so I hope they all make the team one day. — Bill Hemmenway, Issaquah Sonics There are other reasons for downfall Steve Kelley's column ("Allen has it all wrong — Sonics made right deal," Seattle Times, Dec. 28) about the Sonics trade of Ray Alen to the Celtics was right. But not for the reasons he cites. One playoff appearance in five years? That has a lot more to do with the previous ownership group shoving Nate McMillan out the door than with Ray Allen's abilities.

The Tragedy of Britney Spears
Only a few kids are in the store, a young girl with her brother and two blondes checking out fake-gold charm bracelets. Britney rifles the racks as the Cure's "Pictures of You" blasts into the airless pink boutique, grabbing a pink lace dress, a few tight black numbers and a frilly red crop top, the kind of shirt that Britney used to wear all the time at seventeen but isn't really appropriate for anyone over that age. Then she ducks into the dressing room with Ghalib. He emerges with her black Am Ex. The card won't go through, but they keep trying it. "Please," begs Ghalib, "get this done quickly." One of the girls runs to Britney's dressing room, explaining the situation through a pink gauze curtain. A wail emerges from the cubby — guttural, vile, the kind of base animalistic shriek only heard at a family member's deathbed.
Clintons' InfoUSA Ties Scrutinized
Last year, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton took the unusual step of renting out some of her lists. The transaction once again highlights the Clintons' connections to a businessman who now faces questions from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Reports from Clinton's campaign show that on Dec. 3, it collected payment for renting out three mailing lists, the sale of which netted them $8,225. It was an unusual transaction, according to Roger Craver, a liberal guru of the political direct-mail industry. "As a general rule, a campaign will not let its donor list out into the markets until the campaign is over," he said. "This is the mother's milk of small-gift fundraising, and they use these lists frequently." There are no records that any other presidential candidates rented out mailing lists last year.

Ski Town USA’s local bar
Tugboat owners Lamb and Hank Edwards have every intention of carrying on, but when developers come to tear down Ski Time Square next summer, it could be last call for the Tugboat as you know and love it. The truth is, they say, they don't know what to expect when the old commercial strip is redeveloped. Edwards says he and Lamb feel dated every time a former bartender, cook or cocktail server shows up in the saloon with a 21-year-old son or daughter in tow, ready to celebrate a rite of passage. “That helps Larry and I appreciate how old we are," Edwards said. “We're proud of the fact that we're constantly hearing from old employees like Spanish (Susan English) and Big Kid (Mike Soergel)." The Tugboat has become virtually synonymous with Ski Town USA.
